ATTITUDE DIAGNOSIS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Atlantic Rainforest, besides being the home for many species of wild animals, is also the place where 72% of the Brazilian population live. Because many of the problems and solutions for the conservation of species are found with humans, we need a diagnosis with a solid basis of the status of the bird species, but we also need to know about people’s attitudes, their challenges, and their level of knowledge based on evidence.

We have developed our plans based on a high standard methodology in Social Sciences in order to increase the probability of interventions and effective actions.

We have a well-developed infrastructure inside Parque das Aves for measuring attitudes about birds and the Atlantic Rainforest biome. With an annual public of more than 830,000 people, our goal is to create an experience with a positive impact for the conservation of Atlantic Rainforest birds inside Parque das Aves. And we measure the impact of this experience.

Furthermore, our surveys provide important data that form a part of a more comprehensive diagnosis on key issues. We measure attitudes related to key issues for bird species of the Atlantic Rainforest, such as trafficking of parrots. By this we were able to gather attitudinal data of people from all Brazilian states who visit Parque das Aves. Up until now we have more than 30,000 questionnaires filled out, which is complementary data that is very rich to base actions upon.

We have teams trained in Social Sciences within the Department of Environmental Education, and a team qualified in data collection techniques. We also have dedicated teams in Social Sciences and in measuring perception on a qualitative and quantitative basis outside the Park, including Prof. Dr. Eric Jensen, a specialist in Social Sciences for Conservation, together with a post-doctoral level professional on the professor’s team who works inside Parque das Aves.

We also apply outside the same infrastructure and expertise that we use inside Parque das Aves as an essential part of the field conservation projects in other parts of Brazil. You can learn more about a strategic planning case based on attitudinal surveys here.
