The Red-spectacled Amazon parrot (Amazona pretrei) depends on the Paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia), a species widely found in the southern states of Brazil, but now considered critically endangered with extinction. The species migrates almost 100 km after the emergence of the seeds, which are edible pine nuts called pinhão.
Once a year, the entire world population of the red-spectacled Amazon parrot, 20,000 individuals, gathers in one place, close to the last largest remnant of Paraná pine forest on the planet.
The Purple-winged Ground Dove (Paraclaravis geoffroyi) , considered possibly extinct, depended on the flowering of native giant bamboo previously growing along wide ranges.
