Evaluation of priorities
– scoring system
Parque das Aves uses some criteria to define its participation in conservation efforts, and they apply to:
. Field projects
. Participating in action plans
. Sponsorship
. Participating in third-party projects
. Efforts on the part of the Parque das Aves team
. Composition of the animals living at the Park
A species only qualifies if it is native to the Atlantic Rainforest. Parque das Aves participates in actions for the conservation of species not from the Atlantic Rainforest only when there is a historic commitment or when its contribution is exceptionally useful for a species for a specific reason. And this also applies to the birds chosen for the attractions. Parque das Aves only keeps birds of species not from the Atlantic Rainforest when there is a preexisting commitment with the species or when it is indicated that an individual should stay under the Park’s care for reasons of animal welfare.

Criteria used to evaluate the participation in actions or initiatives
1. Choice of species
• Is the species classified as threatened of extinction? Is there a strong suspicion that it is threatened?
• Does the species currently NOT have a conservation project or action specifically associated with it?
• Is the species subject to human pressure in an intensive way such as trafficking or hunting in general? (may include species not threatened)
• Are the populations of this species suffering human pressure in the region of Foz do Iguaçu? (may include species not threatened)
• If a possible project for this species is started, is there a good chance it will be taken over by another organization that could sponsor it?
• Is the species found locally? (Foz do Iguaçu)
• Is the species endemic to the tropical semideciduous Atlantic Rainforest?
• Would the project associated with this species be carried out locally?
• Does the majority of actions of this project, research, and action affect more than one species of Atlantic Rainforest bird that needs these specific actions? (umbrella effect)
• Does the species have a particularly important role to the ecosystem?
2. Investment amount
• Does this project have a high cost-benefit? (cost versus return of conservation)
• Does this project have a good chance of success?
• Does the project proposed fit into Parque das Aves’ institutional strengths?
3. Integrated conservation values (One Plan Approach)
• Is the species an attraction at the Parque das Aves?
• Would the inclusion of the species at the Park be advisable for the purposes of reproduction for conservation? (According to IUCN’s guidelines for ex situ management)
• Would the inclusion of this species into the Park be particularly desirable for research?
• Would the inclusion of this species into the Park be particularly desirable for education?
• Would the species have a satisfactory score in the Population Plan?
• Does the inclusion of this species not require building new structures?
• Does the project proposed involve one of the 10 species with the highest score in the Park’s Population Plan?
• Does the project proposed involve the collaboration of more than one sector of the Park?
• Does the project proposed involve the cooperation of external institutions?
